Photographer in Kona, Hawaii

I’m Sterling Batson, a family, couples, and wedding photographer in Kona and across the Big Island. Whether you’re visiting for a week or you live on the Kona side, I’ll help you pick the right beach, the right light, and a relaxed pace so the photos feel like you, not like a pose.

Popular Kona photo locations

  • Four Seasons Hualālai public beach – soft sand, black lava rock, and palms. My most requested Kona spot.
  • Hāpuna Beach – wide white-sand beach with some of the best sunsets on the island.
  • Beach 69 (Waialea Bay) – shady trees and calm water, great for families with little ones.
  • Old Kona Airport – long coastline and tide pools, close to Kailua-Kona town.

Not sure where to go? Tell me where you’re staying and I’ll suggest a spot that’s easy to get to.

When to book your session

The best light in Kona is the last hour before sunset. Sunset runs from about 5:50 pm in winter to about 7:05 pm in summer, so most sessions start 45–60 minutes before that. Holidays (December and spring break) fill up early, so book a few weeks ahead if you can.

Sessions

Choose from relaxed 40-minute sessions up to 90-minute sessions with time for outfit changes and more than one spot. Every session includes edited digital downloads, and Kona coast travel is included. Medium format film is available as an add-on for a timeless, true-film look. See all packages and check availability on the booking page.

What to wear

Solid colors photograph best against the ocean and lava rock: all-white linen, or soft blues, yellows, and corals. Avoid busy patterns and logos, and bring sandals you can walk in on sand.

Families, couples, proposals, and weddings

I photograph families (including three-generation groups of 13 or more), couples and engagements, surprise proposals, maternity sessions, headshots, and small weddings and elopements along the Kona coast.

Frequently asked questions

How soon will I get my photos? Proofs are usually ready within a few business days, and your final gallery follows shortly after.

What if it rains? Kona is usually the drier side of the island. If the forecast looks wet, we’ll check it together and either move to a drier spot or pick a new time.

Do you also shoot in Hilo? Yes. I’m based in Hilo and photograph all around the Big Island.
